Digital recording technology has revolutionized the working of the music industry as of now. While purists crave the warmth and mellowness of analog, most people value the flexibility and value for money that digital sound can provide.

For recording studios, digital recording is definitely a boon. First of all, it is much more cost-effective than analog, as a result of which studios can now be accessed by small groups who would earlier need recourse to home recordings. As a result, music demos and small-scale theater soundtracks come out sounding cleaner and more “finished” than they could have even twenty years ago.

Secondly, digital audio can also be edited much more easily than analog – especially where noise removal is required. While the analog sound would itself suffer after undergoing noise removal, digital audio can be edited without deteriorating perceptibly in quality. Studio procedures like pitch correction and track mixing are also much easier with digital recordings than in analog.

With VST plugins and digitally generated sound effects, it is easily possible to mimic the sound of any natural phenomenon or human-created instrument almost to perfection. Also, the ability to mix down the finished track and publish it directly onto DATs, CDs and hard disks has made music much more accessible to the general public, not all of whom can afford vinyl.

The gap between analog and digital is closing at great speed, especially as sampling rates continue to rise and the sound gets fuller and warmer. Soon, there shall be no practical distinctions between the capabilities of a digital setup and that of an analog one.
